Jimmy Kimmel's television program is currently on hiatus.

In a recent development, ABC News has suspended Jimmy Kimmel's late-night show following a debate about his statements regarding the killing of far-right podcaster and Trump ally, Charlie Kirk. The move has sparked controversy and criticism, with some viewing it as an attack on freedom of speech and the press.

The controversy surrounding Kimmel's show began after the prosecution alleged that the suspected attacker carried out the attack due to Kirk's political views. Kimmel's comments about the incident have been deemed controversial by many, leading to the suspension of his show.

Brendan Carr, the current FCC chairman, who was appointed by former US President Donald Trump, threatened to revoke ABC stations' licenses if they continued to air the show. Carr, who was described by Trump as a 'warrior for free speech,' seems to be taking a different stance, wanting to silence unwanted voices.

Nexstar Media Group, which operates 23 ABC subsidiaries, distanced itself from Jimmy Kimmel. This could shake the media diversity of the USA, as Nexstar Media Group is the largest player in the US TV market with nearly 200 different stations nationwide.

The suspension of Kimmel's show is not the first time Trump has taken action against media and the press. During his first term, Trump attempted to go after journalists and repeatedly threatened to revoke the licenses of broadcasting stations. He also excluded the news agency AP from the White House, and took legal action against the Wall Street Journal over its coverage of his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Trump has a history of disliking late-night talk show hosts, having gotten into arguments with Stephen Colbert in the past. Recently, he expressed his delight at Colbert's departure from CBS, a subsidiary of Paramount. Trump also threatened Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, calling on NBC to cancel their shows and describing them as 'total failures.'

Criticism from Germany: Mika Beuster, federal chairman of the German Journalists' Association, criticized the temporary suspension of Kimmel's show as an attack on freedom of speech and the press. Foreign journalists may now only receive visas for 240 days instead of several years, a method to restrict independent reporting abroad.

Trump has strong influence on social media, including his own platform, Truth Social, and potential alternative platforms like TikTok, where experts expect the US government could gain the right to appoint a board member. Trump responded to the death of his ally, Charlie Kirk, on his social media platform Truth Social, congratulating ABC for suspending Jimmy Kimmel's show.

Since returning to office, Trump has intensified his actions against media and the press, including suing the New York Times for alleged defamation and seeking $15 million in damages. This text was updated on September 18, 4:00 PM.
