Jimmy Kimmel faces demands to meet certain conditions in order to have his suspension lifted
In a dramatic turn of events, Sinclair, the largest ABC affiliate group, has suspended the late-night talk show 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' indefinitely, starting from September 17, due to controversial comments made by host Jimmy Kimmel regarding the death of Charlie Kirk.
The dispute between Sinclair and ABC stems from Kimmel's September 15 monologue, where he mocked US President Donald Trump's casual remarks about a White House ballroom while reacting to condolences over Kirk's death. Kimmel also criticized attempts to politicize Kirk's murder. However, no specific steps taken by ABC or Kimmel to address Sinclair's concerns have been mentioned.
Sinclair has set conditions for Kimmel's return to on-air, which were shared by Sinclair vice chairman Jason Smith on September 17. The conditions include Kimmel apologizing directly to Charlie Kirk's family, personally donating to the family and Turning Point USA, and upholding broadcast standards to promote respectful, constructive dialogue in communities.
In a press release, Sinclair expressed its objection to Kimmel's comments about the assassination of Charlie Kirk. The broadcasting company announced the airing of a tribute special for Kirk in Kimmel's slot across its 30 markets, including KOMO, WJLA, KDNL, KTUL, and KATU.
Sinclair's demands come as the company urges regulators to curb big networks' control over local stations. The company has also praised FCC Chairman Brendan Carr's response in the ongoing dispute.
As of now, the future of 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' remains uncertain, with Sinclair refusing to restore the show until proper steps are taken to uphold broadcast standards. The incident has sparked a heated debate about the role of broadcasters in promoting respectful dialogue and the limits of free speech in the media.
