Jimmy Colbert expresses sorrow, echoing "we're all Jimmy Kimmel tonight", in a heartfelt tribute to his fallen ABC counterpart
In a recent turn of events, late-night hosts Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel found themselves at the centre of a heated dispute with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and ABC News.
The controversy began when Jimmy Kimmel criticized the reaction to the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, drawing comparisons between Trump's response and a 4-year-old mourning a goldfish. Kimmel also suggested that the alleged assassin, Tyler Robinson, was part of the "MAGA gang", a claim that was later reaffirmed in Tuesday's indictment.
FCC Chair Brendan Carr took exception to Kimmel's comments, threatening ABC News with action against Jimmy Kimmel's show, "Jimmy Kimmel Live!". This threat seemed to have an immediate effect, as ABC News decided to pull the show off the air indefinitely.
However, Colbert, host of "The Late Show", came to Kimmel's defence. He accused Carr of being a hypocrite, citing a 2020 social media post in which Carr decried the censoring of political satire, including late-night comedians. Colbert also called ABC News' move to yank Kimmel's show "blatant censorship".
Colbert stood firmly by Kimmel, telling his audience that he stood with the "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" host and his staff 100%. He also dismissed Kimmel's comments about Kirk as not being so "provocative".
The dispute has led to mounting pressure on ABC News, with ABC News affiliate stations and the FCC applying pressure over their handling of the situation. Colbert warned ABC News that if they think pulling Kimmel's show will satisfy the regime, they are "woefully naive".
Meanwhile, CBS announced that "The Late Show" would end in May 2026, possibly linked to their $8 billion merger with Skydance Media. It remains to be seen how this development will impact the ongoing dispute between Colbert, Kimmel, and the FCC.
