Jimmy Barnes and Kate Ceberano surprise Melbourne with free City Square concert

Melbourne’s City Square hosted a surprise free concert on Sunday, led by Jimmy Barnes, Kate Ceberano, and Ian Moss. The event marked the first in a series of pop-up performances planned for December and January. Organisers aimed to revive confidence in the city’s central business district after recent disruptions.

The idea for the concert series came from promoter Michael Chugg. He worked with hotel and restaurant businesses to address worries about protests discouraging visitors. Just over a week earlier, an Amyl and the Sniffers gig at Federation Square had been cancelled due to safety concerns.

The concert series will continue through December and January in various city locations. Businesses hope the performances will attract more visitors and support local trade. Organisers have not revealed whether further safety measures will be introduced for future events.
