Melsungen Appoints Swedish Larsson as Sports Director - Jesper Larsson takes helm at MT Melsungen with a three-year vision for handball success
MT Melsungen has appointed Jesper Larsson as its new director of sports. The 52-year-old Swede will take over the role on May 1, signing a three-year contract. He replaces Michael Allendorf and brings experience from both playing and leadership positions in handball.
Larsson's career spans decades in German handball. As a player, he featured for clubs like HSG Nordhorn, TuSEM Essen, and TBV Lemgo. After retiring, he moved into management, working with Swedish side IFK Kristianstad in various capacities, including sporting director and executive board member. His most recent focus was on youth development at the same club.
At MT Melsungen, Larsson will oversee the professional team while also leading efforts to develop young talent and integrate them into the Bundesliga squad. His appointment coincides with changes to the club's leadership structure. The executive branch will shrink from three to two members, with Axel Renner leaving on September 30, 2026. No replacement will be named, leaving Andreas Mohr and Larsson as the sole board members.
Larsson's arrival marks a shift in both sporting direction and governance at MT Melsungen. His contract runs until 2027, with a clear mandate to strengthen the first team and build a pathway for youth players. The club's executive branch will now operate with a leaner structure, focusing on long-term development.
