Jennifer Lopez's Concert in Almaty Boosts Local Economy and International Profile
Jennifer Lopez's concert in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on August 10, attracted a crowd of 27,000 fans, with over 7,000 of them being international visitors from more than 35 countries. The event took place at the Central Stadium and generated substantial economic benefits and impacts for the city.
Tourism officials emphasised that such large-scale events generate substantial revenue. Foreign guests' expenses during the concert reportedly brought over 5 billion tenge (~$11.5 million) to Almaty’s local economy. Hotels, restaurants, coffee shops, and transport services saw increased business, with the food court at the stadium earning about 15 million tenge ($34,000) on the concert day alone.
The audience and Lopez's production team praised the extensive preparations and high level of organization in Almaty. Ticket prices for the concert ranged from 40,000 to 180,000 tenge. International visitors spent an average of 3.5 days in Almaty, with daily expenditures of $440.
The government's role mainly involved maintaining public safety and order, with minimal or no state budget expenditure on event organization. The total turnover tied to the Almaty concert, including direct and indirect economic activity, is preliminarily estimated to exceed 10 billion tenge (~$23 million).
Such high-profile events attract visitors from neighboring countries and beyond, helping position Almaty as a vibrant cultural and tourist destination. The concert in Almaty further highlighted Kazakhstan's growing appeal as a regional hub for international entertainment.
For comparison, Jennifer Lopez’s concerts in other Central Asian cities like Astana and Tashkent similarly spurred tourism and raised tax revenues, validating the broader regional economic potential of hosting international pop stars. The increased hotel occupancy, restaurant patronage, enhanced local retail sales, transport use, and sightseeing spending collectively stimulated the city's economy during and after the event.
