Jennifer Jones Austin discusses the battle against poverty and its effects on racial minority communities
In the heart of New York City, the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies (FPWA) continues its mission to address poverty and inequality. Originally known as the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies, FPWA has evolved to become a leading anti-poverty organisation.
FPWA's current focus is on policies related to job creation, income support, and economic stability. The organisation is working tirelessly to move from basic subsistence to economic security as the goal for individuals and families in the city. This approach aims to ensure that New Yorkers living in poverty can not only survive but thrive.
However, FPWA recognises that more needs to be done. The organisation is advocating for policies that address the challenges faced by low- and middle-income New Yorkers, particularly in regards to childcare and housing. The goal is to ensure that solutions do not exacerbate the problem, but instead provide housing that helps these New Yorkers save and build a better future.
In her upcoming keynote speech at City & State's "Economic & Workforce Development Summit", FPWA's Executive Director and CEO, Jennifer Jones Austin, will discuss these issues and more.
FPWA's mission has historically focused on the disproportionate impact of poverty on communities of colour. The organisation's work includes raising wages, ending wage segregation, enforcing pay equity, establishing accurate poverty measures, and dismantling unjust systems.
The city is making strides in ensuring childcare for families with young children, and providing affordable housing. However, FPWA's work informs policies related to workforce, housing, and childcare for individuals who are struggling. The organisation's efforts are essential in ensuring that these policies are effective and equitable.
As the North Star for prosperity in New York City, FPWA centres on economic security. The organisation's work is essential in the fight against poverty and inequality, and in ensuring that all New Yorkers have the opportunity to save, thrive, and build a better future.
