Jennifer Jones Austin discusses strategies for reducing poverty and its effects on communities of racial minority backgrounds

In the heart of New York City, the century-old anti-poverty organisation, FPWA, is making strides in ensuring a brighter future for all its residents. The city, while doing well in areas such as childcare for families with young children and affordable housing, is focusing on more than just survival. FPWA is working tirelessly to ensure universal, meaningful childcare and housing that helps people save and thrive.

FPWA's current focus is on economic security as the North Star for prosperity. They are pursuing policies that promote fair labor standards, support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and encourage sustainable economic growth. The organisation is advocating for policies that address wage issues, wage segregation, pay equity, accurate poverty measures, and unjust systems.

The biggest challenge in New York City and across the nation is not just focusing on basic needs and subsistence, but on economic security and future planning. To increase employment and reduce poverty, it's important to strive to do good while doing no further harm, and to develop solutions that drive toward economic security and dignity.

FPWA is also acutely aware of the disproportionate impact of poverty on communities of colour. They are focusing on what it costs to get ahead and stay ahead in New York City, and are working on policies that move from basic subsistence to economic security.

Jennifer Jones Austin, the Executive Director and CEO of FPWA, will be giving a keynote speech at City & State's "Economic & Workforce Development Summit" on Thursday. Her insights and the work of FPWA are shaping the city's policies related to workforce, housing, and childcare.

FPWA has been a beacon of hope for vulnerable individuals, families, and agencies serving them for the past 100 years. Their economic security measure is at the forefront of their efforts to create a city where everyone can thrive, not just survive.
