Jena's Zeiss Planetarium Shuts Down for Renovation Work

Shuttering the Jena Zeiss Planetarium for a Multi-Million Euro Renovation from 2026

- Jena's Zeiss Planetarium Shuts Down for Renovation Work

Let's face it, folks – if you've been itching for a cosmic journey in Jena's iconic Zeiss Planetarium, you better get your tickets ASAP! Later next year, this spectacular stargazing spot will shut down for a massive renovation, and you don't wanna miss the final twinkling of stars before the cosmic overhaul.

As part of its centennial extravaganza in 2023, this dome-tacular destination will be sprinkled with fresh outdoor facilities and outfitted with top-tier projection tech, thanks to an investment of around four to six million euros. Planetarium Director Stefan Harnisch boldly asserts that this overhaul will blend the completely unique historical charm with a modern, sensory stellar spectacle. But, hold your horses – the process of renewing the dome's projection surface piloted by the protected architectural status puts the cat amongst the stars (okay, that was a bit corny, but I couldn't resist).

Before the sledgehammers start swinging, the planetarium's putting on a show – a new production called "Legends of the Night Sky" hailing from Ukrainian producers, weaving together astronomy and mythological stories. Shooting stars, here we come!

Since the planetarium opened its doors in 1926, it's been a star-studded destination, attracting millions of visitors. In 1923, Zeiss developed planetarium technology on behalf of the German Museum and built the first planetarium in the world at its headquarters in Jena. That's right, the city's been the cradle of cosmic exploration!
