Determining the cause of death, a coroner ruled that Jeff succumbed to blunt head trauma as a result of the golf cart accident, which took place on April 26, 2025, at the Madison Club in La Quinta, California. The incident occurred during a quarter-mile trip from a private function at the Madison Club to Elway's home on the resort. Elway was the one behind the wheel of the golf cart at the time of the accident, with others present including Elway's girlfriend, his son, daughter-in-law, Sperbeck, and his wife, Cori (as reported by 9News). The accident was ultimately ruled an accident by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.
John Elway and the group had initially planned to attend the outdoor Stagecoach country music festival in nearby Indio on April 26, but these plans were abandoned due to cold weather. Instead, the three couples joined a caravan of golf carts carrying between 10 and 15 people. Elway was driving the cart at the rear of the caravan with his girlfriend seated beside him.
