Jeff Bezos is engaged in a court dispute with his brother-in-law
Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, and his wife, Lauren Sanchez, are currently engaged in a long-running legal dispute with Lauren's brother, Michael Sanchez. The couple has filed a petition with the California Supreme Court, requesting Michael Sanchez to pay approximately $190,000 in legal fees and court costs.
The legal battle arose from a defamation lawsuit Michael Sanchez filed in February 2020, accusing Bezos and Lauren Sanchez of leaking images and text messages to the National Enquirer. The couple counter-sued under California's Anti-SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) statute, aiming to dismiss what they argue are baseless and frivolous claims. They characterize Michael’s actions as a "multi-year campaign of harassment" aiming to extract an undeserved financial settlement.
The motion for attorney’s fees was filed on July 28, 2023, in California Superior Court as part of their ongoing effort to recover costs incurred during their successful Anti-SLAPP defense. Previously, in 2021, Bezos was awarded $218,385 in legal fees, but the dispute has continued.
The petition includes attorney's fees and court costs incurred in connection with their successful special motion to strike and the current motion for attorney's fees and costs. The lawyers for Lauren Sanchez describe the legal disputes as a "multi-year harassment campaign."
The family feud between Jeff Bezos and Michael Sanchez is reported to have erupted over the circumstances surrounding the revelation of Bezos' relationship with Lauren Sanchez in 2019. The dispute is said to be related to allegations that Michael Sanchez sold text messages and "inappropriate photos" to the National Enquirer, which he denies.
In the process, Lauren Sanchez reportedly cut off contact with her mother. Michael Sanchez has been vocal in his criticism, reportedly calling his sister and brother-in-law "liars and cheaters" and the U.S. justice system "corrupt."
The Los Angeles County Superior Court ruled in favor of Jeff Bezos in November 2020. The legal dispute between Jeff Bezos and Michael Sanchez remains at an impasse, with the petition for attorney's fees and costs being the latest development. The three-day mega-wedding of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez took place in Venice in late June.
