Jean-Paul Boëtius leads Suriname's World Cup dream after beating cancer twice

Suriname's national team faces a crucial World Cup playoff against Bolivia this week. Among their squad is Jean-Paul Boëtius, a player who has battled testicular cancer while continuing his football career. His journey from diagnosis to recovery has been marked by resilience, including a recent return to professional play. Boëtius was first diagnosed with testicular cancer on September 22, 2022. Despite the setback, he returned to the pitch just a month after surgery. His determination was tested again when a second tumour appeared on March 8, 2024, leading to further chemotherapy.

By January 21, 2025, he had recovered enough to sign with Darmstadt, resuming his Bundesliga career. Before that, he briefly rejoined RKC Waalwijk in the Netherlands to rebuild his match fitness. His decision to represent Suriname in the 2025 World Cup qualifiers adds another chapter to his comeback story. Suriname's path to the World Cup hinges on winning two playoff matches. Their first test comes on Thursday against Bolivia, a game they must win to stay in contention. Boëtius remains one of only a few Bundesliga players publicly known to have faced cancer in recent years, with no other active cases reported since 2022.

Boëtius now balances club commitments with international duty as Suriname chases a historic World Cup spot. His return to top-level football follows multiple cancer treatments and a transfer to Darmstadt. The outcome of Thursday's match will determine whether his team advances in the qualifying campaign.
