Jazz and Hornets Complete Collin Sexton Trade Deal
The Utah Jazz have made a significant roster move, trading guard Collin Sexton and a future second-round pick to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for center Jusuf Nurkic.
The deal was confirmed on Tuesday, marking a pivotal moment for both teams as they look to strengthen their respective rosters.
For the Jazz, the acquisition of Nurkic comes after the drafting of two young guards, Ace Bailey and Walter Clayton Jr., in the 2023 NBA Draft. This trade signals a strategic move to clear minutes and roster space in the backcourt while boosting their frontcourt depth with Nurkic, who will serve as a backup center behind Walker Kessler.
Sexton, 26, is joining Charlotte on an expiring contract for the 2025-26 season, with one year and about $19 million remaining on his deal. The 11-year NBA veteran, Nurkic, was acquired by Charlotte mid-season last year and averaged 8.9 points and 7.8 rebounds last season. He is also on an expiring contract worth around $19 million.
Nurkic's arrival in Utah follows his departure from the Portland Trail Blazers, where he was previously involved in the multi-pronged deal that sent Damian Lillard to the Milwaukee Bucks.
Meanwhile, Sexton, who stood as one of the faces of the Jazz's post-Donovan Mitchell era, becomes redundant for the team after the acquisition of Bailey and Clayton Jr.
In Charlotte, Sexton will join a team with high hopes for their backcourt talents LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller, but both have struggled with staying healthy in recent seasons. The Hornets have experienced their worst 82-game season since their first season under the Charlotte Bobcats moniker in 2004-05.
The Hornets have also sent veteran Mark Williams to the Phoenix Suns as part of the deal.
In other Jazz news, John Collins has picked up his $26.5 million player option for the 2023-2024 season, while Utah Jazz's Walker Kessler remains an attractive trade option for potential interior renovation.

The Utah Jazz's acquisition of Jusuf Nurkic from the Charlotte Hornets, following the departure of Collin Sexton, indicates a strategic shift towards bolstering their frontcourt depth and creating roster space in the backcourt. With Sexton joining the Hornets, who are hoping to strengthen their backcourt with his addition, the two teams have made significant moves in the NBA, impacting their respective sports and basketball fortunes.
Sexton, an 11-year NBA veteran, and Nurkic, who is also on an expiring contract, have both been traded with the aim of improving team performances. The Jazz have recently drafted guards Ace Bailey and Walter Clayton Jr., signaling a potential leadership change in the backcourt.
In a broader context, these trades underline the dynamic nature of sports, particularly basketball, where teams are always seeking competitive advantages and balance in their rosters, as evidenced by the NBA.
