The Grumman HU-16 Albatross, originally designed for search and rescue missions, has a unique front hatch that allows crew members to lean out. This feature was used in operations to throw or retrieve tow ropes during water landings. The aircraft also includes a rear clamshell-style tail door, which opens upward and downward to form a step or slide for quick exits into the water.
