Jay Leno’s wild mid-air stunt from a vintage seaplane stuns onlookers

Jay Leno executed a daring mid-air stunt by leaning out of a vintage seaplane over the Pacific Ocean. The comedian and car enthusiast popped his head through the front hatch of a Grumman HU-16 Albatross during a pleasure flight. The move was part of a surprise for friends and an appearance on Spike Feresten’s podcast.

The Grumman HU-16 Albatross, originally designed for search and rescue missions, has a unique front hatch that allows crew members to lean out. This feature was used in operations to throw or retrieve tow ropes during water landings. The aircraft also includes a rear clamshell-style tail door, which opens upward and downward to form a step or slide for quick exits into the water.

Leno’s stunt took place during a recreational flight, with the crew fully aware and ensuring safety throughout. The Albatross, known for its ability to land and take off on water, provided the perfect platform for the unexpected maneuver. The moment was captured for Feresten’s podcast, adding an extra layer of excitement to the flight.

The stunt showcased the Albatross’s distinctive design features, originally built for rescue operations. Leno’s brief but bold appearance outside the aircraft added a memorable twist to the flight. The crew’s supervision ensured the move remained safe while delivering a thrilling spectacle.
