Japan's Prime Minister Ishiba considered making a trip to Busan, South Korea
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is set to embark on a two-day trip to the city of Busan, South Korea, around Sept. 30. This will mark his first visit to South Korea since taking office in October 2024.
The trip comes as Ishiba prepares to step down as Prime Minister, with the Liberal Democratic Party, of which he is the president, set to hold an election to pick a new party chief on Oct. 4.
During his visit, Ishiba will hold talks with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung. The discussions will focus on finding strategies to address the overconcentration in metropolitan areas and declining populations in regional areas in both countries.
The upcoming meeting between Ishiba and Lee is a continuation of their efforts to strengthen bilateral relations. In fact, their talks in Tokyo on Aug. 23 saw Lee express a desire to meet Ishiba in a regional area of South Korea.
The discussions between the two leaders will aim to find solutions for the shared challenges faced by both Japan and South Korea. They will also cover strategies to address social issues such as aging populations and regional revitalization.
The Japanese government will send its top officials to Seoul for the visit, but the exact individual has not been explicitly named in the search results. The visit is planned to take place in Seoul as part of efforts to deepen Japan-South Korea relations and strengthen trilateral cooperation with the United States.
The talks between Ishiba and Lee Jae-myung during the visit are expected to take place. The trip will be Ishiba's last overseas trip before his resignation.
The visit to South Korea will take place in the city of Busan. The trip is being arranged by both the Japanese and South Korean governments, and it is expected to further deepen the diplomatic relationship between the two nations.
