New Leadership for Japan's Nippon Ishin no Kai Following Sluggish Election Results

The Nippon Ishin no Kai, a political party in Japan's parliament, has seen a reshuffle in its leadership following the 2025 House of Councillors election. This change comes in response to the party's sluggish showing in last month's parliamentary election.

Hirofumi Yoshimura, the governor of Osaka Prefecture and the party's leader, stated that the personnel changes aim to unite all members of the party. Yoshimura, who continued as the party leader, will be joined by Fumitake Fujita as co-leader, Hiroshi Nakatsuka as secretary-general, Takashi Endo as parliamentary affairs chief, and Alex Saito as policy chief.

Fumitake Fujita, a member of the House of Representatives who was first elected in 2021, succeeded Seiji Maehara as co-leader. Hiroshi Nakatsuka, who was considered for the appointment, is expected to take up his role as secretary-general in August 2025. Takashi Endo, who returned to the post of parliamentary affairs chief, and Alex Saito, named as policy chief, are both members of the Japanese parliament.

Kaori Takagi, another member of the party, became the general affairs chief. The announcements of these new appointments were made at a press conference in Osaka, the headquarters of the Nippon Ishin no Kai.

This new leadership team comes as the party addresses challenges such as intraparty conflicts within the Nippon Ishin no Kai, which is an opposition party located in western Japan, specifically in Osaka Prefecture. The party's focus on unity and addressing internal issues is a clear response to the poor election results, indicating a renewed commitment to success in future elections.
