Japanese Movie "Kokuho" Earns Over 10 Billion Yen at Box Office
In the realm of Japanese cinema, the movie "Kokuho" has made a significant impact, becoming the third highest-grossing live-action film in Japan's history. Directed by Lee Sang-il, this captivating production has generated over 10.5 billion yen in box office revenue within its first 73 days of release.
The movie's protagonist, played by Ryo Yoshizawa, portrays a kabuki actor, adding an authentic touch to the narrative. The film also features a compelling rival actor role, played by Ryusei Yokohama, contributing to the intrigue and competition that drive the plot.
"Kokuho" is a film adaptation of Shuichi Yoshida's same-name novel, and it marks a significant milestone in the world of Japanese cinema. It's worth noting that this is the first time in 22 years that the revenue of a live-action Japanese movie has exceeded 10 billion yen, since "Bayside Shakedown 2" in 2003.
Despite its impressive performance, "Kokuho" does not make it to the all-time top 10 highest-grossing films in Japan. The list is dominated by anime and foreign live-action films. As of 2025, "Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle," an anime sequel, has surpassed "Bayside Shakeddown 2" with approximately 17.6 to 17.8 billion yen, pushing Japanese live-action films out of the top rankings.
"Kokuho" surpasses the box office revenue of "Antarctica," which grossed 11 billion yen in 1983. This makes "Kokuho" the first live-action Japanese movie to surpass 10.5 billion yen in box office revenue since "Bayside Shakedown 2" earned 17.35 billion yen in 2003.
The box office revenue of "Kokuho" continues to grow, making it a promising contender in the world of Japanese cinema. The film is distributed by Toho Co., a renowned name in the Japanese film industry.
With its compelling narrative, captivating performances, and impressive box office success, "Kokuho" is a must-watch for any movie enthusiast.
