Japanese comedy-drama 'Did Someone Happen to Mention Me?' to receive boost from streaming giant Netflix, featuring veteran actor Koji Yakusho.
In commemoration of its 10-year anniversary in the Japanese market, streaming giant Netflix has unveiled three new original series that are set to captivate audiences. Among these offerings is 'Straight to Hell,' a biographical drama revolving around the life of Kazuko Hosoki, a fortune-teller who dominated Japanese media from the 1980s through the 2000s.
Erika Toda, known for her versatile acting, stars as Hosoki in this compelling series. 'Straight to Hell' delves into the darker, lesser-known chapters of Hosoki's early life and her meteoric rise to fame, offering a fresh perspective on a figure who was once a household name in Japan.
Another series on the horizon is 'Did Someone Happen to Mention Me?,' an original comedy-drama from Kankuro Kudo and Aki Isoyama. Koji Yakusho, who recently won the Cannes Film Festival's best actor prize in 2023, stars as Gen Takasegawa, a once-lauded Japanese actor who has been forgotten by everyone. The series explores the human obsession with recognition, promising a thought-provoking journey for viewers.
The third series, 'JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run,' is an adaptation of one of the manga's most celebrated arcs, set in 19th-century America. The series follows paraplegic former jockey Johnny Joestar and mysterious outlaw Gyro Zeppeli as they compete in a dangerous, cross-continental horse race. David Production is leading animation for the series, with Warner Bros. Japan hosting a special event in Japan on Sept. 23 to unveil more details about the series and its launch.
Netflix's commitment to live-action Japanese content continues to grow, with Japan remaining one of the company's key growth engines in the Asia-Pacific region. The country surpassed the 10 million subscriber milestone late last year, demonstrating the strong demand for high-quality Japanese content.
As these new series prepare for their respective releases, directors Tomoyuki Takimoto and Yasuhiro Kimura express excitement about their projects. Takimoto, the director of 'Straight to Hell,' initially disliked Kazuko Hosoki but was drawn to her compelling rise from poverty and Erika Toda's performance. Kimura, the director of 'JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run,' is thrilled about being entrusted with the adaptation and anticipates sharing the enthusiasm for the work with viewers.
Stay tuned for the streaming dates of these exciting new series, with 'Straight to Hell' set to stream in 2026, and 'JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run' following suit. 'Did Someone Happen to Mention Me?' is expected to release at a later date.
