Japanese artists Murakami and Nara are standout features at the Villajoyosa's Japan Now! Exhibition
In the charming coastal town of Villajoyosa, Spain, the Espai d'Art Contemporani La Barbera is set to host a captivating exhibition, "Japan Now!", from September 11, 2022, to November 14, 2025. This extensive showcase reaffirms Villajoyosa's dedication to promoting international contemporary art and fostering cultural dialogue.
At the heart of the exhibition is the fusion of Japanese aesthetics and mass culture, particularly in the youth market. This merging is largely due to technological innovation and the kawaii aesthetic, a term that encapsulates the charm and cuteness of Japanese pop culture.
The exhibition features a diverse array of artists, with works by Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara, Aya Takano, Chiho Aoshima, Mr., Chinatsu Ban, Mahomi Kunikata, Akane Koide, Yuken Teruya, Yuko Mohri, and Mariko Kusumoto.
Murakami's works, a central highlight, blend classical Japanese art with American pop, creating a unique and thought-provoking blend. Nara's works, on the other hand, draw inspiration from anime, manga, and Western urban subcultures, adding a modern twist to traditional Japanese art.
One intriguing aspect of the exhibition is the integration of Nara's drawings on ancient Japanese ukiyo-e prints. This juxtaposition of the old and the new is a testament to the ever-evolving nature of art and culture.
Councillor Carlos Soler stated that the exhibition is intended for both young people and the general public, making it an accessible and engaging experience for all. The exhibition serves as a prelude to the Manga Fair in Villajoyosa on September 20, further cementing the town's commitment to celebrating Japanese culture.
The Espai d'Art Contemporani La Barbera follows its usual hours for the duration of the exhibition: Monday to Friday from 10am to 1pm, and Monday to Thursday from 5.30pm to 8pm.
