The Japanese government has taken swift action by initiating the evacuation of Japanese citizens stationed in Israel and Iran due to the intensifying tension in the region. Japanese government spokesman, Yoshimasa Hayashi, revealed that military aircraft have been deployed to Djibouti as a precautionary measure.
Japan's embassies are making arrangements to move citizens by bus towards neighboring countries, with aircraft on standby, ready to respond immediately should the need for an evacuation arise. According to the Japanese Foreign Ministry's estimates, there are around 1,200 Japanese nationals residing in Israel and approximately 280 in Iran.
Last week, Israel launched a significant strike against Iran, decimating nuclear facilities and military bases with the aim of eradicating their nuclear program. Iran has responded with counterattacks, targeting Israel with rockets and drones.
It's essential to note that, as of June 20, 2025, approximately 87 Japanese citizens and their families have been safely evacuated from both countries, with 66 individuals having reached Baku, Azerbaijan, and 21 making it to Amman, Jordan by bus, due to airport closures in their respective countries. No immediate health concerns were reported among the evacuees.
The Japanese government has increased its travel advisory for all of Iran to the highest level (Level 4), urging all Japanese nationals to depart immediately and refrain from any unnecessary travel due to the intensifying threat from Israeli attacks on Iranian targets.
Japan, in preparation for potential air evacuations, has dispatched two military C-2 transport planes and around 120 Self-Defense Force personnel to Djibouti, where a military base is already maintained. These forces are on alert, ready to airlift Japanese citizens whenever airport facilities in Iran and Israel become operational again, aiding in the ongoing evacuation efforts.
