Japan is steeling itself for an emergency rescue mission, as tensions flare up in the Middle East. The Japanese government mobilizes its forces, with military aircraft stationed in Djibouti, East Africa, in anticipation of a potential airlift of Japanese citizens from Iran and Israel. Japanese government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi announced the preparations, citing the "restless situation in the Middle East."

The Japanese embassies in Iran and Israel are mobilizing citizens for evacuation. Buses are on standby to move Japanese nationals to neighboring countries, with aircraft ready to respond instantly if necessary. An estimated 1,000 Japanese nationals reside in Israel, while approximately 280 live in Iran.

Last week, Israel launched a massive assault, bombing Iranian nuclear facilities and military installations and wiping out several high-ranking military officials. Israel's declared objective: to dismantle Iran's nuclear program. In response, Iran has retaliated with rockets and drone attacks targeting Israel.

These developments follow a pattern of escalating tensions in the region. Japan is working closely with embattled citizens, emphasizing urgency and safety in evacuation plans.

As of now, 87 Japanese nationals and their families have been evacuated via buses from both countries. They have reached safety in Baku, Azerbaijan, and Amman, Jordan. The Japanese government intends to carry out additional bus evacuations from Iran as early as Saturday, June 21, 2025.

Japan has dispatched two C-2 transport aircraft and approximately 120 Self-Defense Forces personnel to Djibouti, readying themselves for the possible airlift of additional Japanese citizens if the situation calls for it. The government has also issued a Level 4 travel advisory for all of Iran, urging Japanese nationals to leave the region immediately.

Clearly, the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran poses a risk to Japanese nationals in these countries. The Japanese government is continually coordinating to ensure the safety and protection of its citizens amid the escalating hostilities.

Community policy should be implemented to ensure the safety of Japanese citizens in war-and-conflicts zones, like the Middle East. The Japan government's focus on environment (evacuation plans, aircraft deployment, buses on standby) indicates a political prioritization of general news regarding its nationals' security in this region.
