Japan currenty withholds official recognition of Palestinian state

The Asahi newspaper reported on Wednesday, citing unnamed government sources, that Japan will not recognize a Palestinian state at this time. This decision aligns with the United States' stance, as the US is Israel's closest ally and has rejected the idea of recognizing a Palestinian state.

The positions of France, Britain, Canada, and Australia on the recognition of Palestine, however, differ from Japan's current position. The stance of these countries, as well as that of Germany and Italy within the G7, aligns with each other, according to separate reports.

Interestingly, the report by the Asahi newspaper does not mention the stance of German and Italian officials within the G7 on the recognition of Palestine. However, it is known that German and Italian officials within the G7 have expressed that an immediate recognition of Palestine is 'counterproductive'.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba will not attend a relevant meeting during the United Nations General Assembly this month, where the issue of Palestinian state recognition is expected to be discussed.

The United Nations General Assembly is still taking place this month, and it remains to be seen if any changes in Japan's position on this matter will be announced. There are no search results indicating that the Japanese government has announced an apology for the temporary recognition of a Palestinian state during this month's UN General Assembly.

As the global community continues to grapple with the complexities of the Middle East conflict, Japan's decision not to recognize a Palestinian state underscores its commitment to maintaining close relations with the United States and Israel.
