Janhvi Kapoor's residence picked as India's official submission for the 2026 Oscars; Karan Johar shares his sentiments on this significant milestone.
In a significant achievement for Indian cinema, the production company Dharma Productions has announced that their upcoming film, "Homebound," directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, will be India's official entry for the 2026 Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category.
Starring Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor, "Homebound" tells the story of two childhood friends from a small North Indian village who chase a police job that promises them dignity. The film, which carries the essence of the home we all share, revolves around their journey and the challenges they face as they inch closer to their dream.
Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese serves as an executive producer on the film, adding an international touch to the production. The selection by The Film Federation of India (FFI) is a testament to the film's quality and potential.
Neeraj Ghaywan, in a statement, shared that he is deeply honored that "Homebound" has been chosen as India's official entry to the Oscars. He expressed his excitement about the film's selection, stating that taking our stories to the world stage and representing India at one of the biggest global stages for cinema is both humbling and a matter of pride.
"Homebound" is a deeply personal story about friendship, dignity, and survival. Ghaywan hopes the film helps us look closer—with empathy—and see what we've been conditioned to ignore. The film, which revolves around unseen characters and their quiet strength, received a 9-minute-long standing ovation at Cannes 2025 and clinched the second runner-up spot for the International People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
Producer Karan Johar also expressed gratitude to the FFI for choosing the film. The release date for "Homebound" in Indian theatres is September 26. With mounting desperation threatening the bond that holds the characters together, the film promises to be a powerful and thought-provoking watch.
