Fan Criticizes Krypto's Name in Superman, Prompting Director James Gunn to Justify His Choice with a Logical Argument

James Gunn defends the choice of name for Krypto the dog in Superman, arguing the reasoning behind it is sound.

In 1955, Krypto, Superman's iconic pet dog, made his debut in DC Comics' Adventure Comics #210. Created by writer Otto Binder and artist Curt Swan, Krypto originated from Jor-El's test animal aboard the rocket that carried baby Kal-El to Earth. His name, "Krypto," a clear nod to Superman's home planet, Krypton, underscores his alien origin and connection to Superman's heritage.

As a Kryptonian dog, Krypto brings a personal and familial element to Superman's story. He symbolises the boy's connection to his lost home world through a relatable, loyal companion. Under Earth's yellow sun, Krypto possesses superpowers mirroring Superman's, including flight, heat vision, and enhanced strength, positioning him not just as a pet but a heroic figure contributing to the superhero narrative.

Since his debut, Krypto has become an enduring character in various media, including TV shows (Krypto the Superdog, Smallville, Titans), animated films (such as DC League of Super-Pets), and the 2025 Superman film. His presence helps bring a family-friendly and approachable aspect to the Superman mythos.

Krypto's family tree was detailed in comics, giving names like Zypto and Vypto to his ancestors, playfully tying into his Kryptonian heritage and establishing a legacy within the DC Universe.

Krypto's significance extends beyond his powers and role. He is a symbolic connection to Krypton, a beloved "Superdog," and a symbolic protector alongside Superman. The planet where Superman and his cousin were born exploded, making Krypto's name a fitting tribute to the lives lost.

In the new DC shared universe, titled "Gods and Monsters," Krypto is expected to return to the DCU soon, with a live-action version of the character stealing scenes in the recent Superman movie. His cameo in Superman revealed him to be Supergirl's dog as well.

Superman, the first big screen installment of the new DCU, is still in theatres. Fans can look forward to Supergirl's release in theatres on June 26, 2026. The streaming service for all DC content is HBO Max, where prepaying for a year of subscription can save up to 20%. The monthly cost for HBO Max's With Ads plan is $9.99, and there are three tiers available for an HBO Max subscription.

James Gunn, co-CEO of DC, regularly shuts down rumors online and communicates with fans about his projects. However, it's important to note that Krypto's name was not a decision made by James Gunn but has a long history in the comics.
