Bangladesh: Jamaat-e-Islami Advocates for Proportional Representation in Upcoming Elections

Jamaat-e-Islami, a political party in Bangladesh, has been vocal about its demands for the upcoming parliamentary elections. The party is advocating for the introduction of the Proportional Representation (PR) system in both houses of parliament.

In a series of rallies held across the country, including Chattogram, Barishal, Khulna, and Rangpur, Jamaat leaders have been urging for the implementation of the PR system. The party's Assistant Secretary General, Rafiqul Islam Khan, has been a key figure in these rallies, emphasizing the need for a fair and inclusive electoral process.

Khan has stated that the people will decide whether they are in favor of PR or not. If the people accept PR, the interim government must also accept it, he added. However, if the people reject PR, Jamaat-e-Islami will also accept that decision.

Jamaat-e-Islami's demands extend beyond the PR system. The party is also calling for a level playing field for all, visible trials of past oppression, killings, and corruption, and a ban on the activities of the Jatiyo Party and 14-party alliance.

In Chattogram, Khan told a rally that people would not accept an "Awami-style" election. He warned that the Jatiyo Party and the 14-party alliance would face the same fate as the fallen "fascist regime" due to their past collaborations.

Speaking in Barishal, Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer Mujibur Rahman predicted a similar outcome, stating that the Jatiyo Party and the 14-party alliance would meet the same fate as the ousted regime due to their past collaborations. He also emphasized that PR voting ensures the value of every vote and is crucial for a free and fair election.

According to a Jamaat leader, out of 31 parties, 25 are in favor of PR. However, the political party in Bangladesh that advocates for the introduction of PR in the next parliamentary elections is not explicitly named in the search results. Discussions around the introduction of proportional representation as a controversial topic in Bangladesh's electoral system exist, indicating that some political actors call for this reform.

Some within the current government have allegedly aligned themselves with a particular party, according to a Jamaat leader. Rafiqul Islam Khan stated that the interim government had promised to implement Jamaat-e-Islami's demands, including visible trials of fascists and their collaborators, recovering laundered money, and creating a proper election environment.

The rallies ended with processions that concluded at various intersections, such as the New Market intersection in Chattogram. The party's demands for a fair and inclusive electoral process continue to resonate with many, as the countdown to the next parliamentary elections begins.
