Jakarta, Nigeria's Wike Declares Tinubu's Limited Availability for Public Interaction
Nyesom Wike, the Minister in charge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), raised questions about the role of ministers and presidential special advisers in government accessibility during an appearance on Channels Television's Politics Today on Tuesday.
Wike implied that ministers and presidential special advisers should be engaged by Nigerians rather than seeking direct access to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He questioned what "government" would be called if everyone needed direct access to the president, suggesting that it would limit the number of people the president could attend to at a time.
Wike's comments come amidst criticism that Tinubu's administration lacks an effective communication strategy despite performing well in governance. The communication gap means that ministers and special advisers tasked with media, communications, and public engagement play a crucial role in bridging the president’s policies and initiatives to Nigerians.
Effective communication from these actors can enhance transparency, provide clarity on government actions, and make the president appear more accessible and connected to the citizenry. However, the criticism from figures such as Babangida Aliyu highlights that the current approach is insufficient, causing dissatisfaction despite government performance because the government "does not know how to communicate very well."
Wike confirmed that the government is approachable and dismissed claims that President Tinubu is unapproachable. He also mentioned that if a person with a problem regarding the activities in the FCT has tried to reach out to him, the FCT minister, as he is in charge of the territory.
The significance of this conversation lies in the emphasis on the importance of ministers and presidential special advisers in shaping the president’s approachability and accessibility. Strengthening the communication roles at ministerial and advisory levels is crucial for better public accessibility and a more approachable image of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
