Christian Louboutin Names Jaden Smith as Chief Menswear Designer

Renowned French fashion designer Christian Louboutin has made a bold move in the fashion industry by appointing Jaden Smith, the son of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, as the chief menswear designer for his iconic brand.

Louboutin, known for his red-soled stilettos, has acknowledged Smith's enthusiasm and taste in fashion, but admitted that he lacks technique. This decision mirrors Louis Vuitton's choice to name Pharrell Williams as creative director for menswear.

At 27 years old, Smith has ventured into music and fashion in addition to acting, having co-founded niche unisex streetwear brand MSFTSrep in 2012. He has been a regular at fashion shows for several years, either as a high-profile front-row guest or as a model.

The media and some Instagram users have criticized the decision as an example of nepotism, referring to Smith as a 'nepo baby'. However, Louboutin believes Smith will showcase the brand's vision in a more visible way.

Smith will be moving to Paris and will be responsible for four men's collections per year, including shoes, leather goods, and accessories. His Instagram followers (19 million) are expected to help the brand connect with younger audiences.

The Business of Fashion publication believes that Louboutin's decision to bring in a new creative director for the men's category is a step towards succession. This sentiment is shared by Stella McCartney, another celebrity child in the fashion industry, who has defied critics by establishing herself as a major player in the fashion world.

Interestingly, Louboutin recently announced that Samuel Ross, not Jaden Smith, will be the new creative director for his men's collection. Ross, at the age of 62, brings a wealth of experience to the role.

Smith, despite his limited experience in the fashion industry, has expressed feelings of pressure regarding his new role. It remains to be seen how he will navigate the challenges ahead and contribute to the success of the Christian Louboutin brand.
