Jackson shelters open as freezing temperatures hit December 14–15

Cold weather is expected in Jackson on December 14 and 15, 2025, prompting several shelters to open their doors. Multiple locations will offer warmth, meals, and safe sleeping spaces for those in need. Each facility has set hours and services to assist residents during the freezing nights ahead.

The Opportunity Center at 845 W Amite Street will open at 5:00 p.m. on both days, providing hot showers, a warm meal, and a heated place to sleep. Guests can arrive between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. without needing an appointment.

For men seeking shelter, the Billy Brumfield House operates daily from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Meanwhile, the Gateway Rescue Mission remains open seven days a week for men, from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Women and children can find refuge at the Matt House, which is open every day from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Salvation Army shelter at 110 Presto Lane will accept men and women aged 18 and older, with check-in between 4:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Overflow accommodation will also be available if needed.

Additionally, Shower Power at 836 South Commerce Street will open at 4:00 p.m. from Sunday to Tuesday, closing at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday for those needing hygiene facilities.
