Everdusk Book 1: The Vampire Jack Townson - A Review by Lorie Lewis Ham

Ever since I was a baby, my mom would watch Dark Shadows with me, nurturing my lifelong affection for the undead. Fast forward to today, and TikTok's allure led me straight to the TikTok sensation known as The Vampire Jack Townson. This hauntingly handsome individual with those beguiling, dark curls and a vampiric attire reminiscent of a dark fantasy novel caught my attention immediately.

Fast forward to late last year, when Jack teased the possibility of reviewers for his upcoming vampire dark fantasy novel The Lightslayer. As I delved deeper into this mesmerizing character beyond the TikTok sphere, it's safe to say I fell head over heels. But before we dive into the book, let's get to know the man - or at least, the vampire - behind the Styrofoam coffin.

Draconia Unveiled

The first book in the Everdusk series, The Lightslayer, takes place in the shadowy world of Draconia, a realm shrouded in darkness, where vampire kingdoms, magic, giants, witches, banshees, werewolves, ogres, gargoyles, and all sorts of fantasy creatures coexist. Nothing seems out of place in this Otherworldly land, as life appears relatively peaceful for Jack and his unconventional family - the ragtag group of misfits known as the Degenerates, who reside in the Manor of Mystery.

However, harmony proves difficult to sustain once Jack uncovers a malevolent conspiracy threatening Draconia and all its inhabitants. Determined to confront the lurking darkness in the light, Jack is far from alone, as he can rely on the support of his Degenerates, as well as a few unlikely allies. Jack is prepared to do anything to protect his family, but defeating this enemy may force him to harness dangerous and ancient magic, potentially altering him forever in the process.

Urban Fantasy with a Twist

The fantastic world Draconia blends traditional high fantasy elements with a dash of urban fantasy, offering readers an intriguing, relatable experience. The language used in The Lightslayer steers away from the formal tropes often associated with fantasy works, making the story more accessible and down-to-earth. Get ready to laugh, gasp, and weep as you're drawn into this spellbinding story. You'll become fully engrossed in these unforgettable, flawed characters whose virtues and vices shine like a beacon of hope amidst the darkness.

Jack Townson, the author, masterfully weaves real-world issues into his fantasy tale, adding a remarkable layer of depth while still keeping it grounded in a vivid, fantastical landscape. Despite the grim nature of this story, Townson still manages to instill hope and resilience in readers. A fitting tagline for Jack's unique universe is, "When your world fails you, find a better one." I assure you, you won't want to leave this one once you've entered.

Jack Townson, who is not necessarily his real name, uses his captivating persona to hide behind when he posts on TikTok. However, his humble origins didn't prevent him from reaching new heights in the realm of literature. Jack credits his partner, Shayne Leighton, for encouraging him to pursue his writing dreams, and together they have created a remarkable universe that evokes a sense of longing and beguilement. An Interview with Jack Townson:

As I chatted with Jack Townson recently, I couldn't help but wonder about the curious dichotomy between his real identity and the character he presents to the public. Here's what he had to say...

KRL: Is Jack Townson your real name or a pseudonym?

Jack: Ah, a clever banter, Lorie. While I can't reveal everything, I will say that Jack is indeed a part of me, but not my entire identity.

KRL: How and when did you create the Vampire Jack Townson?

Jack: It all started when I slipped on the persona of Jack for my internet shows, and it felt like slipping on the ultimate power suit. My life suddenly unfolded with purpose and direction. It was as though I was meant to be Jack.

KRL: What made you decide to write a novel about Jack? What was the initial book about? How long did it take you to write it?

Jack: My partner and best-selling author, Shayne Leighton, saw the stories I was concocting on TikTok and encouraged me to write my first book, which is a prequel called Fame Has Its Price. Writing that book took me about a year.

KRL: How did you decide what your vampire lore would be like?

Jack: I drew inspiration from various sources – Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, "Legacy of Kain," and other gothic tales – and crafted a world unlike any other, with vampires drawn from the void, the bottomless darkness of the cosmos. I also incorporated different breeds of vampires, like Voidborn, Alchemical Vampires, and cursed vampires.

KRL: Have you always wanted to write?

Jack: Writing has been a passion of mine since high school, fueled by my love for tales of adventure, woe, and horror. It's just taken me a while to find my voice.

KRL: What can you tell us about the new book, The Lightslayer?

Jack: Let me put it this way: In The Lightslayer, Jack Townson faces a formidable conspiracy that threatens to engulf everything he holds dear. He must confront this darkness head-on, pitting his will against the odds. His allies include a group of misfits, as well as some unlikely friends. The story is about more than just bloody battles and action – it's a tale of love, sacrifice, loss, and the struggle between good and evil. Grab a copy now and find out whether Jack and his friends can emerge victorious and preserve their world or if their endeavor will ultimately end in failure.

KRL: How did you come up with the idea for Draconia? What inspired you?

Jack: I drew inspiration from countless realms of fantasy, such as Middle Earth, Narnia, and Neverland, but I wanted to create a world unlike any other – a dark haven that contrasted with these bright dynasties. The world of Draconia is gloomy and steeped in darkness, where vampires rule over ancient kingdoms, and the supernatural has its grip on the land.

KRL: What inspired Jack's character, other than yourself?

Jack: I drew inspiration from a myriad of sources, including characters like Alucard from "Hellsing," Geralt of Rivia from "The Witcher," Dante from "Devil May Cry," and Louis de Pointe du Lac from "Interview with the Vampire."

KRL: How is Jack different from you, in your personal life?

Jack: While Jack shares some aspects of my personality, he is a altogether different creature. He is quick to anger, possesses a voracious sexual appetite, and leaps before he thinks. By contrast, I am more cerebral, preferring to resolve conflict through discussion rather than action. In essence, Jack is my power fantasy, embodying aspects of me that I have always strived to become.

KRL: How long did it take you to develop the world of Draconia?

Jack: Four years, but I'm still adding to it now, alongside my amazing fans, known as the Fang-Fam. Together, we have crafted a rich, textured world filled with captivating creatures and complex power struggles.

KRL: How do you keep track of it all?

Jack: My trusty noodle-skidoodle!

KRL: Who is the Fang-Fam and how are they involved in your storytelling and the book itself? Were they part of the writing process?

Jack: The Fang-Fam is an integral part of my world-building journey, as they have co-created Draconia alongside me. They have been involved in crafting stories for TikTok, aiding in developing the world, and painting stunning artwork. The wondrous maps of Draconia as well as various pieces of artwork that grace the pages of The Lightslayer were all lovingly created by members of the Fang-Fam. They are a crucial ally in my mission to expand the world of Draconia and share the adventures of Jack Townson with fans everywhere.

KRL: How long did it take you to write The Lightslayer?

Jack: Writing the immersive, spellbinding tale of The Lightslayer took approximately a year. When I set my mind to a task, I focus intently, allowing me to complete projects with impressive speed.

KRL: Do you have a set number of books you have planned for the series?

Jack: The main timeline will span six to nine books, but beyond that lies the tantalizing prospect of side quest novellas and even a film! Stay tuned for updates on future releases.

KRL: What is your writing routine like?

Jack: When it's time to put pen to paper, I don my hoodie, light a few candles, and delve into my playlists. By immersing myself in the world of Draconia, I am able to channel the mythos I have created and conjure forth the powerful, uncensored tales that captivate readers.

KRL: What events do you have planned for the release of The Lightslayer?

Jack: A whirlwind of events is on the horizon, including digital signings, meet-and-greets, and there might even be a book tour or two! Keep your eyes peeled for more updates – the excitement is building!

KRL: Where can you purchase the book?

Jack: You can find The Lightslayer in bookstores all over the globe or purchase it online from major e-retailers. To make things easier, here's a link for your convenience: books2read.com/b/4NnLZ6
