The America 250 Commission, the official nationwide initiative for planning, promoting, and coordinating the commemoration of the United States' 250th anniversary in 2026, has welcomed a new member. Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of President John F. Kennedy, has been appointed to the Commission.

The Commission's purpose is to foster a renewed love of American history, strengthen civic engagement, and inspire a commitment to the founding ideals of liberty, equality, and democracy for current and future generations. It encourages states and territories to establish their own commissions, supports diverse storytelling programs, promotes patriotic activities, facilitates grants and community projects, and serves as a platform for national reflection and civic renewal.

Schlossberg's involvement in the Commission highlights the symbolic connection between America's historical legacies and the continuity of civic leadership and public engagement. In a video announcement, Schlossberg quoted a line from the popular musical Hamilton, saying, "I am young, scrappy, and hungry, and I am not going to throw away this shot." He expressed the importance of celebrating the country's history for the sake of its future and emphasized the need to celebrate the country for all of its colors.

Senator Chuck Schumer, who appointed Schlossberg to the Commission, stated that he did so to counteract any attempts by Donald Trump to aggrandize the celebrations. Trump has previously created the White House Task Force on Celebrating America's 250th Birthday, also known as the "Salute to America 250 Task Force."

Before joining the America 250 Commission, Schlossberg expressed that America is the heir of the first revolution and that the country has not always lived up to its founding documents. He referenced the Hamilton musical during the video announcement of his appointment.
