J.J. Watt becomes first inductee into Houston Sports Hall of Fame 2026
J.J. Watt has been named the first member of the Houston Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2026. The announcement came during a live Men in Blazers event at Rice University's Brockman Hall for Opera. Watt, a former Houston Texans star, is recognised for his dominance on the field and his deep ties to the city.
Watt spent a decade with the Texans, establishing himself as the franchise's greatest defensive player. He holds the team record for sacks with 101.0 and ranks among the NFL's all-time leaders with 114.5 career sacks. His achievements include three Defensive Player of the Year awards and five First-Team All-Pro selections.
He remains the only player in league history to record two seasons with 20-plus sacks.
Beyond football, Watt's impact on Houston is equally notable. In 2017, he raised over $41 million for Hurricane Harvey relief, earning him the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award. His dedication to the community has solidified his legacy in the city.
The Hall of Fame honour adds to Watt's existing accolades, including his place in the Texans' Ring of Honor. He will become eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2028. Two more members will join him in the 2026 class, with further announcements expected in the coming months.
Watt's induction celebrates his football excellence and his lasting contributions to Houston. The ceremony will mark another milestone for a player already regarded as one of the city's most influential athletes. His selection also highlights the Hall of Fame's focus on both sporting achievement and community leadership.
