"J.D. Simo revealed that he was asked to teach Jeremy Allen White guitar skills for the Springsteen film, confessing that he had no prior knowledge about it: his guidance aiding White to emulate the Boss's style"
In the world of biopic movies, the Hollywood treatment is coming for none other than Bruce Springsteen. The Boss will be portrayed by Jeremy Allen White, who has been tasked with not only embodying the iconic musician but also learning to play the guitar. To help him on this journey, J.D. Simo, a session guru with an impressive resume, has been enlisted.
Simo, who has worked with artists like Jack White, Tommy Emmanuel, Samantha Fish, Joe Bonamassa, and was part of the Baz Luhrmann Elvis biopic, is no stranger to the music industry. However, this is his first time teaching guitar lessons.
"Having a strong foundation in guitar playing would make the actor better able to make music with the least amount of vocabulary," Simo expressed, acknowledging the pressure of wanting to set up White to win in his role as Springsteen.
White is not the first actor to face this challenge. Larry Saltzman, Chalamet's guitar tutor for the Bob Dylan biopic, revealed that Chalamet opted for a budget Yamaha guitar for his initial learning process, despite an offer of Gibsons. Simo, too, was asked to teach White to play guitar for the Springsteen movie.
Simo likened the guitar learning process to an ocean, where each learned nugget opens up into a bunch. He advised White to take it one step at a time, emphasizing the importance of a strong foundation, hand strength, and finger control. He warned against stacking too much information, stating it would lead to a "shit sandwich" and potentially require unlearning later.
Simo also compared the learning process to sitting and playing a phrase for days until it clicks, and then moving it around and applying it to different keys. He understands the pressure of wanting to master the guitar quickly for the role, but stressed the importance of patience and persistence.
The biopic genre has seen a rise in recent years, with movies like Bob Dylan's A Complete Unknown, the confirmed four-part Beatles movie, and a movie starring Lizzo as Sister Rosetta Tharpe. As White embarks on this musical journey, we eagerly await his transformation into the legendary Bruce Springsteen.
