Iván Romeo abandons Paris-Nice race after battling illness all week

Cyclist Iván Romeo has withdrawn from the Paris-Nice race due to illness. The rider, who began the event as an outsider, will miss the sixth stage after suffering from stomach problems. His exit follows a difficult week on the course, where he lost time to competitors like Uchon.

Romeo started the Paris-Nice race as one of the lesser-known contenders. By Friday, he sat in 73rd place overall. His struggles became clearer earlier in the week when he fell behind during a stage to Uchon and again on Thursday after a short-lived breakaway attempt.

The 2024 Tour de France, running from June 29 to July 21, began in Florence and finished in Nice without weather-related disruptions. However, Romeo's campaign in Paris-Nice faced personal setbacks. His team confirmed he would not line up for the sixth stage, citing ongoing stomach troubles.

With Romeo's withdrawal, the Paris-Nice field narrows further. His absence leaves him unable to recover lost ground in the standings. The race continues without him as other riders push ahead.
