Golfing with his son, Charlie, brings Tiger Woods joy and fuels their mutual competitive spirit. Their rivalry doesn't stem from a selfish desire to outdo each other, but from their shared love for the game and the motivation to improve.
Recently, Tiger made his return to competition after nearly eight months since his knee surgery. On December 16, the duo hit the greens for the 'PNC Championship' at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Orlando, Florida. His 14-year-old son, Charlie, donned the green jacket, mirroring his father's veteran presence.
Charlie's growth spurted him an astounding 10cm since last year, a stark contrast to his younger self who joined the tournament three years ago. Automatically, the competition shifted in a new direction. Though Woods joked about the possibility of Charlie outshining him soon, his tone was playful, reflecting how much he enjoys this bonding moment with his son.
Justin Thomas, a two-time major winner, and his father, Mike, also partook in the championship. The four golfers assembled for a tee time at 8:22 EST.
"It's been a blast," Tiger told NBC on Friday. "Our competitive nature benefits us, pushing us to excel and maintain a fun, lively environment."
The pair trained together the day before and displayed their uncanny resemblance in their golf swings and attitudes. Tiger watched as Charlie, adorned in a red shirt and white trousers, teed off on the 18th hole, his drive powerful and precise.
Charlie asked for his dad's attention when he tossed a caddie off the cart – "You're just making jokes," he chastised, as he was keen to learn from his father the significance of appropriate timing and setting during the learning process.
Tiger's lessons transcended the golf course too. Monumental obstacles, setbacks, and challenges have shaped his career but haven't thwarted his ambitions. In 2023, he aims to participate in a tournament every month.
Meanwhile, rain looms over the 2023 championship, but it's not just the weather that players must contend with. Mastering the game alongside family members requires skill, patience, and fortitude.
