Italy's prized cross-country ski trails ruined by reckless tourists
Cross-country ski trails in Italy's Folgaria region are under threat from careless tourists. Operators at the Centro Fondo Alpe Coe have made an urgent plea on social media, asking hikers and snowshoers to stay off the groomed tracks. The repeated damage is forcing staff to work extra hours to repair the trails, often late into the night.
The issue has become particularly severe at night. Snow groomers frequently encounter pedestrians walking directly on the freshly prepared trails, despite clear warnings. Staff have described the emotional strain of constantly fixing damage caused by foot traffic, only for the problem to repeat the next day.
Operators have stressed that walking on cross-country trails is both forbidden and hazardous. The Centro Fondo Alpe Coe has set up separate, clearly marked paths for pedestrians and snowshoers, using yellow signs for visibility. Yet many visitors continue to ignore these rules, ruining the surface for skiers and creating dangerous conditions.
While no other Italian ski centres have reported similar widespread problems, the situation in Folgaria remains tense. Local staff have criticised the rude behaviour of some tourists, who dismiss warnings and disrupt the trails for others.
The repeated damage to cross-country trails is putting extra pressure on grooming teams. Despite designated paths and public appeals, illegal use persists, risking both skier safety and trail quality. Operators are now calling for greater awareness to protect the region's winter sports infrastructure.
