A major step in sustainable shipping has taken place in the Port of Genoa. For the first time in Italy, a vessel has been refuelled with bio-liquefied natural gas (bio-LNG) in a ship-to-ship operation. The process involved the GNV Virgo, a passenger and freight ferry now running on this cleaner fuel source.

The refuelling was carried out by Axpo and GNV, who transferred 500 cubic metres of bio-LNG to the GNV Virgo. This amount is sufficient to power the ferry’s return trip to Palermo. Bio-LNG, derived from organic waste, offers a far lower environmental impact than traditional marine fuels.

The successful refuelling demonstrates the feasibility of bio-LNG as a sustainable alternative for shipping. If scaled up, this technology could help the industry meet strict emissions targets. The GNV Virgo’s operation now serves as a practical example of how bio-LNG can reduce the carbon footprint of maritime travel.
