Italy's Daily News Summary for Today: Updates on Current Affairs as of Friday

Italy's Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has lashed out at the Council of Europe following their recommendation for Rome to investigate cases of racial profiling in its police forces. Salvini deemed the Council's call as "baseless" and accused it of producing "useless" reports.

During a visit to Italy, the Council of Europe's Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) urged the Italian government to conduct an independent study on racial profiling as soon as possible. The ECRI's report published on Tuesday highlighted the persistence of racial profiling throughout Europe, including at stop-and-search policing and border controls.

Giorgia Meloni, Italy's Prime Minister, also criticized the call, stating that the ECRI indulges in unfounded judgments, which are the result of an ideological approach and evident prejudices. Moreover, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani described the allegations as "misleading" and "offensive," warning they might fuel hatred against the Italian police.

Meanwhile, leaders from both Italy and France will convene for talks on June 3rd. The discussions between PM Meloni and French President Emmanuel Macron will focus on various international, European, and bilateral matters. Resolving the threat of trade tariffs, Ukraine tension, and institutionalizing dialogue between the US and EU are expected to feature prominently on the agenda.

European Union's officials declared that they are well-positioned to reach their 2030 climate targets, with emissions forecasted to decrease by 54% compared to 1990 levels. The continuous reduction in emissions reflects a longstanding effort by EU member states to minimize their impact on the environment. However, the commission emphasized the necessity for immediate action in sectors experiencing disparities and the need for enhanced measures regarding forest protection and carbon storage.
