Italy's baseball miracle: How the Azzurri stunned the 2024 World Classic

Italy's national baseball team made history at the 2024 World Baseball Classic. Their unexpected success captured the country's attention, even breaking new ground on television. For the first time ever, a baseball game was broadcast live on national Italian TV—showcasing their quarterfinal clash with Puerto Rico.

The Azzurri entered the tournament as underdogs but quickly became fan favourites. They remained undefeated through the early stages, even stunning defending champions Team USA. Their run only ended in the semifinals, marking Italy's deepest advance in WBC history.

Pitcher Dylan DeLucia played a key role in their quarterfinal victory over Puerto Rico. The American-born hurler delivered four shutout innings, silencing a powerful offence. After the game, he received 60 messages in Italian—many from grateful fans, though he couldn't understand a word. Back home, interest in baseball exploded. Online searches for the sport surged to four times their usual levels, the highest since 2010. In Nettuno, a coastal town nicknamed *Città del Baseball*, celebrations were particularly loud. Meanwhile, Gianlucca Marcoccio's Facebook group, *Il Bar del Baseball*, became a virtual hub for fans to watch and discuss every game. Team captain Vinnie Pasquantino now wants to build on this momentum. He plans to organise baseball camps in Italy to develop local talent. Manager Federico Pagnini also hopes to bring back former MLB catcher Francisco Cervelli for the next WBC—and field at least six Italian-born players.

Italy's Cinderella run has left a lasting mark. The tournament boosted the sport's visibility, from TV broadcasts to online searches. With new initiatives in the works, the Azzurri aim to turn this success into long-term growth for Italian baseball.
