First EM Match Since 1998: Hanning Goes Down with Italy - Italy’s Azzurri return to UEFA Champions League after 26-year absence
Italy’s handball team has returned to the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 1998. Under new head coach Bob Hanning, the Azzurri aim to rebuild their presence in international competition. Their campaign began with a heavy defeat against Iceland, one of the tournament’s medal favourites.
The Azzurri suffered a 26–39 loss in their opening match against Iceland. The result highlighted the challenge ahead for a team making its first championship appearance in 26 years. Hanning, the former vice president of the German Handball Federation, now leads Italy with a clear mission: to restore the team’s competitiveness and grow the sport’s popularity in the country.
Italy’s next group-stage matches are against Hungary and Poland. Only the top two teams from each preliminary group will progress to the main round. Hanning has set a realistic target—reaching the second phase—despite Italy entering the tournament as underdogs. Hungary, coached by Chema Rodriguez, could face Hanning’s side again if both teams advance. The group and main rounds will take place across Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, starting on January 16, 2026.
Italy’s return to the UEFA Champions League marks a step forward after decades away. Hanning’s leadership will be tested as the team fights for a place in the next round. The matches against Hungary and Poland will decide whether the Azzurri can extend their run in the competition.
