Italy Greenlights 467 MW of New Battery Storage Projects in 2026
Italy has approved a series of new battery energy storage system (BESS) projects, significantly boosting the country's energy capacity. In March 2026, the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) issued seven decrees greenlighting facilities across multiple regions. Together, these projects will add 467 MW of storage to the national grid.
The largest approved facility, a 130 MW system, will be built in Loreo (Rovigo) by EG Orchidea Srl. Another major project, a 100 MW BESS, was authorised for Turin under RNE20 Srl. Meanwhile, Bess Arezzo Srl secured approval for a 75 MW facility in Arezzo.
Smaller but notable projects include a 48 MW BESS in Villa Castelli (Brindisi) by SKI 38 Srl and another 48 MW system in Galatone (Lecce) by SKI B A2 Srl. SKI B A3 Srl will also develop a 42 MW facility in Montemilone (Potenza). Additionally, Aura IT 10 Srl received the go-ahead for a 24 MW BESS in Pegognaga (Mantua). These latest approvals follow a broader push since 2024, when the government authorised 12 additional storage projects, each with at least 50 MW capacity. The new facilities span six regions: Lombardy, Puglia, Piedmont, Veneto, Basilicata, and Tuscany.
The newly approved BESS projects will increase Italy's energy storage capacity by 467 MW. The facilities, spread across multiple regions, mark a continued expansion of the country's renewable energy infrastructure. Construction is expected to proceed following the recent ministerial decrees.
