Deadly Attack on Farmers and Fishermen in Borno State: ISWAP Strikes Again
ISWAP Militants Slaughter 23 Agricultural Workers in Borno Region
Located in the northeastern part of Nigeria, Borno State has been experiencing an unfathomable security crisis, primarily due to the resurfacing terror of the infamous Boko Haram. While the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) also poses a significant threat, the recent attack in Malam Karanti village near Baga, Kukawa Local Government Area, has reignited fears of intensifying chaos.
In the morning hours of Thursday, ISWAP insurgents stormed Malam Karanti, surrounding and executing at least 23 farmers and fishermen from Gwoza. The victims had reportedly negotiated with a rival Boko Haram faction to cultivate and fish in lands and waters controlled by insurgents, in exchange for regular levies.
According to counter-insurgency specialist Zagazola Makama, ISWAP accuses the victims of collaborating with their rivals and undermining their control over the region. The terrorists spared an elderly man, who alerted the community after escaping the carnage. Attempts to recover the bodies were thwarted when ISWAP returned and opened fire on the search party, forcing them to retreat without retrieving the remains.
Such alliances with terrorists are not uncommon, as some local communities remain trusting, believing these agreements offer some degree of protection. However, as demonstrated in this attack, this trust often proves to be misplaced, with possible betrayal, inter-factional rivalry, and deadly reprisals lurking at every turn.
Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has previously cautioned against such agreements, dubbing them as substantial contributors to the terrorism crisis. Despite his warnings, some local communities continue to engage in these dangerous alliances.
