The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced an escalation of operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, with the mobilization of tens of thousands of civilians. The military operations are part of the new Gideon's Chariots strategy, a comprehensive plan for the takeover of the coastal region.

The strategy, unanimously approved by the Israeli Security Cabinet, includes a "large-scale attack" on Islamist Hamas. According to reports, the plan aims to gather most of the residents within the Gaza Strip and resettle them to a sterile area, away from Hamas control. "This is to protect the people," Israeli army spokesman Effie Defrin explained.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other cabinet members reportedly expressed support for U.S. President Donald Trump's proposal to resettle the Gaza Strip's population to neighboring countries like Jordan or Egypt. However, Trump's proposal has sparked international outrage, with Egypt and Jordan outright rejecting any form of resettlement.

The plan to takeover the Gaza Strip comes amid regular protests from Israelis calling for an agreement with Hamas to free the hostages still being held in the strip. As of now, 58 hostages remain in Hamas custody, with reports suggesting that 34 of them may have passed away.

The new plan for the Gaza Strip has been met with criticism from relatives of the still-held hostages and aid organizations. They argue that the government is placing greater importance on land conquest than on freeing the hostages.

The controversial nature of the Gaza war within Israel reaches high levels, as the Netanyahu government faces public scrutiny for its military policies in the region. Some argue that the current approach is a recipe for ongoing conflict, without a clear path to peace or the release of the hostages.

A spokesperson for the German Foreign Office reacted with concern to the reports of the new Israeli plan, stating that the Gaza Strip "belongs to the Palestinians." The United Nations and the European Union have also voiced their concerns regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip.

Israel has been conducting large-scale air strikes and a new ground offensive on Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip since mid-March. IDF Chief Eyal Samir has announced the mobilization of tens of thousands of reservists to intensify and expand operations in the Gaza Strip. The military offensive aims to destroy Hamas' infrastructure both above and below ground.

Critics, including aid organizations like the Norwegian Refugee Council, have strongly rejected Israel's plan to distribute humanitarian aid through private contractors instead of UN agencies, arguing that this move would exacerbate the Gaza Strip's humanitarian crisis. While the Israeli government claims that there is enough food in the region, aid organizations warn of a looming humanitarian and health crisis due to Israel's ongoing blockade since early 2025.

  1. The European Union, given its role in global politics and general news, has a responsibility to ensure that the EU's foreign policy voluntarily contradicts any Israeli plan for the militarization of the Gaza Strip, as it could potentially escalate war-and-conflicts in the region.
  2. Despite U.S. President Donald Trump's proposal to resettle the Gaza Strip's population to neighboring countries, the Security Cabinet's greenlighting of "Gideon's Chariots" for the region's conquest implies a contradiction of the intent to protect civilians from warfare.
  3. The ongoing military operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, such as "Gideon's Chariots," may ultimately hinder aid distribution and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the region, causing concern for aid organizations and international entities like the United Nations and the European Union.
  4. Israel's plan to takeover the Gaza Strip, which involves resettling its population and intensifying military operations, is subject to public scrutiny and criticism not only within the country but also from other nations and humanitarian organizations, questioning its ethical values and its strategy for achieving a sustainable peace.
