Israel's potential participation in Eurovision sparks a boycott threat from Spain's public television
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is facing a significant decision regarding Israel's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2026. The organization, which will make the decision around December 2025, has launched a consultation with all members over the issue.
The controversy stems from Israel's military actions in Gaza, which has led several countries to threaten boycotts. Spain, the first of the 'big five' nations to make such a threat, announced it will boycott the contest next year if Israel participates. The Spanish Culture Minister's call for boycotting Israel has been a driving force behind this decision.
RTVE, the Spanish public broadcaster, has also threatened to withdraw from the contest for the first time in history if the EBU decides to keep Israeli public broadcaster KAN as a participant. This threat has been echoed by several other countries, including Ireland, Slovenia, Iceland, and the Netherlands.
The Eurovision Song Contest, the world's largest live televised music event, attracts over 166 million viewers across 37 countries each year. The 2026 edition of the contest will be held in Vienna, Austria, after Austrian singer JJ won this year's competition. However, the EBU has yet to confirm whether Israel will participate in the 2026 edition.
The EBU's decision will be made at its general assembly in December. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has previously stated that Israel should be excluded from the Eurovision Song Contest due to its military campaign in Gaza. The outcome of the decision could have far-reaching implications for the contest and international relations.
The Eurovision Song Contest, known for its unity and celebration of diversity, finds itself in a challenging position. As the EBU prepares to make its decision, the future of Israel's participation in the competition remains uncertain.
