Israel's evacuation process is under investigation by Berlin authorities.

German citizens stranded in Israel are on the federal government's radar. Amidst tense regional dynamics, efforts are underway to bring these citizens to safety. While other nations have already embarked on this mission, Germany's drastic numbers call for a more systematic approach.

A Game Changer: Germany's Plan of Action

Discussions in Berlin revolve around potential evacuation moves for German nationals in Israel. After Poland and the Czech Republic have evacuated their own citizens, a spokesperson from the Federal Foreign Office emphasized Germany's unique predicament of having a larger number of citizens still in Israel when compared to a few of its European counterparts.

"We're investigating all options," declared the spokesperson, although airspace closures have temporarily ruled out some exit routes. On Monday, Germany's crisis team met once again to tackle the evolving situation. In the meantime, the Federal Foreign Office urges all Germans in the region to register on the crisis preparedness list, Elefand, to ensure direct contactability.

As of now, Elefand boasts around 4,000 German registrations in Israel, a rapidly escalating number. A similar trend is observed in Iran, where the platform hosts roughly 1,000 registrations.

Poland's Innovative Land Evacuation Strategy

Poland is planning a unique, land-based convoy to Iran's neighbor, Jordan. Once there, Polish nationals will be evacuated by air back to Poland. Poland's Deputy Foreign Minister, Henryka Moscicka-Dendys, anticipates the evacuation to start within the next few dozen hours, aiming to assist only tourists and those with a temporary stay in Israel. No evacuation from other Middle East regions is currently planned.

Slovakia's Quick Response

Slovakia is another European nation gearing up to evacuate its citizens. Two government planes were deployed for this task, with the first plane expected to return to Bratislava on Monday evening, transporting 91 passengers from Jordan. Further details are being withheld for security reasons. A second plane is scheduled for a flight from Cyprus. Slovakia maintains contact with all citizens in the region who have voluntarily registered and guides them on their next steps.

Limited Romanian Action so Far

According to Romanian media, individual Romanians are already exiting Israel via Jordan, while another possible route is through Egypt. The Romanian government has yet to announce any evacuation plans but continues to monitor the situation closely.

Contextualizing the Situation

  • Germany: The federal government reviews options to safely evacuate its citizens from Israel, with flights to Jordan under consideration. Registrations on the "Elefand" list have surged, signifying a growing number of Germans in need of assistance.
  • Poland: Plans for a convoy to bring Polish nationals to neighboring Jordan via land have been announced, with air transportation from Amman to Poland in the pipeline.
  • Slovakia: Two government planes have been sent to the region, with the first plane returning with 91 passengers from Jordan on Monday evening.
  • European Union: Centralized efforts are underway to help EU members with the evacuation of European citizens from the Middle East.
