Israel's critical decision regarding the Gaza truce proposal: Implication for the peace accord

In a developing situation, ceasefire proposals have been put forth to end the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The deal, which preserves 98% of a proposal presented by US envoy Steve Witkoff in May, has been met with urging from the US and other allies for Israel to accept it.

The proposals offer a 60-day truce, during which talks on a comprehensive long-term peace deal would take place. Hamas has accepted these terms, along with the release of Gaza hostages, an influx of aid, and the release of Palestinian prisoners.

However, the Israeli government's stance remains uncertain. While they have announced plans to call up 60,000 additional reservists, indicating a focus on intensifying their campaign rather than finding a way to stop the fighting, it is unclear whether they will go along with another phased release of prisoners as stipulated in the deal.

The ultranationalists in Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet are reportedly opposed to any agreement, potentially creating internal tension within the Israeli government. This opposition, coupled with the government's focus on military action, has reinforced the isolation of the government, as evident in a large rally in Israel last weekend attended by over 400,000 demonstrators.

The rally has also put pressure on Israel's allies, particularly the US, to exert maximum pressure for acceptance of the deal. The US, along with Egypt and Qatar, is proposed to provide guarantees to extend the truce if additional time is needed.

The consequences of not accepting the deal could result in a worsening of the humanitarian crisis in the region. The French president, Emmanuel Macron, warns that not accepting the deal and proceeding with the new offensive could lead to "permanent war" in the region. The new offensive by Israel could deepen the already terrible and unconscionable humanitarian crisis.

Amidst this, it is worth noting that Israel is also considering a new settlement strategy in the West Bank. The future developments in this conflict remain uncertain, and the international community continues to watch with bated breath.
