Germany Reaffirms Support for Israel, Criticizes Settlement Policy in Central Park of International Law

In a significant statement, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany has reaffirmed the country's unwavering support for the State of Israel. This declaration was made at a celebration marking the 75th anniversary of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, which took place in Berlin's Central Park.

The Central Council, an umbrella organization of Jewish communities, serves as the political, social, and religious representative of the Jewish community in Germany. Central Council President Josef Schuster, in his address, urged Merz not to distance himself from Israel.

Merz, however, has criticized Israel's actions in the Middle East conflict and has restricted the export of weapons to Israel. This decision, he said, was not a sign of distancing from Israel but a call for Israel to refrain from further annexations, considering the current settlement policy in the West Bank as contrary to international law and a hindrance for a future Palestinian state.

Schuster, in response to the decision, had protested and demanded a revision. He also expressed concern about some statements from Israeli cabinet members that are causing concern among Jews outside Israel.

Merz, in his speech, addressed the possibility of criticism of the Israeli government. He distanced himself from 'Israel-criticism' that is increasingly being used as a pretext for anti-Semitism. He emphasized that Germany's commitment to the existence and security of the State of Israel is an unnegotiable component of the normative foundations of the country.

The Chancellor also stated his horror and shame at the increased anti-Semitism in Germany since the terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. He appealed to the people in the country to show civil courage when they witness anti-Semitism, racism, or discrimination.

The Central Council highlighted that the anniversary is a call to continue to raise their voice clearly and distinctly, also in the interest of democracy. They emphasized that Jewish life in Germany is diverse and visible.

Merz concluded his speech by calling upon everyone in Germany to stand up for a coexistence in freedom and keep the conversation going. He reiterated that the fight against anti-Semitism and hatred is a theme that must be addressed in modern society.

As the Jewish community celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Central Council and the upcoming Jewish New Year festival of Rosh Hashanah, Merz's statements serve as a reminder of Germany's continued support for Israel and its commitment to combating anti-Semitism.
