Title: A Closer Look at the Gaza Strip Crisis: Civilian Casualties and International Response

In the troubled Gaza Strip, the situation has spiraled into a severe humanitarian crisis, with 19 months of non-stop war intensifying tensions. Israel's far-right finance minister recently suggested Gaza should be "completely wiped out."

Tragically, the consequences of this conflict are evident. Spokesman Mahmud Bassal informed AFP that 15 martyrs and 10 injured individuals were recovered following airstrikes on the Al-Karama school, housing displaced persons in the Tuffah neighborhood, east of Gaza City. Earlier, Bassal reported 11 deaths from the strikes within the territory.

A particularly heartbreaking strike targeted a family home in the southern city of Khan Yunis, killing eight members of the Al-Qidra family and wounding 12 others, according to Bassal. The ages of the deceased ranged from two to 54. AFP footage from Khan Yunis documented distressed children crying on hospital beds, as bodies wrapped in blankets were transported to the Nasser Hospital in ambulances.

"They were sleeping, and the house collapsed on them," said Abir Shehab, mourning her brother's death. "We die of hunger, we die of war, we die of fear, we die of everything, and the entire world just watches us die," she added.

Other airstrikes, such as one in the Jabalia refugee camp that claimed three lives and injured eight others, have contributed to the rising toll. The Israeli military declined to comment on these airstrikes.

The renewed Israeli military offensive in Gaza started on March 18, following the end of a two-month truce in its battle against Hamas, instigated by the Palestinian group's October 2023 attack. As of May 4, 2025, the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry reported that at least 2,545 people had perished since Israel resumed its campaign, bringing the total war casualties to 52,653. The deaths on the Israeli side reached 1,218, primarily civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. Additionally, 251 individuals have been abducted, with 58 still detained in Gaza.

Hamas itself has stated that it sees no point in continuing ceasefire negotiations with Israel, accusing the latter of waging a "hunger war" against Gaza. The United Nations has repeatedly warned of the possibility of a humanitarian catastrophe, with the threat of famine once again looming after over two months of Israeli aid blockade.

Experts warn that the displacement of Palestinians under harsh conditions could constitute war crimes, potentially amounting to crimes against humanity. Amnesty International recommends that Israel immediately abandon its plans for annexation in Gaza and the forced displacement of Palestinians, as these actions violate international law.

With growing international pressure and continued civilian casualties, the complex and volatile Gaza Strip crisis remains a pressing concern for the international community.
