Israeli shelling in Gaza leads to loss of 17 lives, as reported by local authorities.

Tragedy unfolded in the Gaza Strip this Tuesday, as a staggering 17 lives were lost and countless others injured near a charity aid distribution center, according to local authorities. These innocent souls were en route to a center managed by the U.S.-backed Gaza Aid Foundation (GAF), nestled in the heart of Gaza. The Israeli military, in a controversial move, claimed it fired warning shots.

The wounded were rushed to two hospitals – Al-Awda Hospital in Nuseirat refugee camp and Al-Quds Hospital in Gaza City. Tensions had intensified last week, following an Israeli military warning that the roads to GAF centers, deemed restricted military zones, should be avoided between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM local time. The GAF has yet to comment on the latest event.

In a statement, the Israeli military reported that soldiers fired warning shots at suspicious individuals advancing in the Wadi Gaza area, posing a potential threat. These incidents occurred well away from the aid distribution center, before its scheduled hours, and aimed at potentially harmful individuals. However, the military's casualty figures differed significantly from those reported by local authorities.

The GAF kicked off humanitarian aid distribution in Gaza at the end of May, implementing a new aid model, which the United Nations has criticized as biased. Gaza residents often endure lengthy treks to reach distribution centers. While the GAF maintains that its distribution points have thus far been incident-free, Palestinians report encountering partial chaos when accessing these sites.

"I braved the dark at 2:00 AM, hoping to secure some food. I saw others returning empty-handed; they claimed the aid packages vanished in minutes," quoted Mohammad Abu Amr, a 40-year-old father of two, to Reuters via a messaging app. "Thousands trudge up from the central areas and the north, only to return home disappointed, having covered over 20 kilometers," he added.
