Israeli sanctions do not encompass Merz
Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz is currently on an inaugural visit to Madrid, where the topic of discussion includes the EU Commission President's proposal for sanctions against Israel. During a press conference with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, the proposal was brought to the forefront.
Ursula von der Leyen, the EU Commission President, proposed trade sanctions and personal sanctions against specific Israeli politicians in response to military actions in the Gaza Strip. The proposed personal sanctions are aimed at Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Minister of Police Itamar Ben-Gvir, who are accused of human rights violations and incitement to hatred.
The proposed trade sanctions would affect approximately 37% of Israeli exports to the EU, making it a significant move if implemented. However, the position of the Federal Government on the proposed sanctions is still under consideration.
In the CDU, trade sanctions are rejected, but there is some openness to personal sanctions. The black-red coalition is divided on the issue, with the SPD advocating for more pressure on Israel and the CSU strictly against further punitive measures. The CDU, especially, is against trade sanctions but open to some personal sanctions.
The discussion on the proposal for sanctions is considered highly controversial within the Federal Government. Federal Chancellor Merz expects the government to have a position on the proposed sanctions by the informal council on October 1st in Copenhagen. At the EU summit scheduled at the beginning of October, a decision on the proposed sanctions will be made.
The location of the upcoming discussion about the EU Commission President's proposal is Madrid, and the German federal government has not yet taken a final position on the EU Commission's proposed sanctions against Israel, which are scheduled to be discussed in early October. The Federal Government has not yet announced its position on the proposed sanctions, but it is expected to be presented at the informal council on October 1st in Copenhagen. The informal council where the Federal Government's position on the proposed sanctions will be presented is in Copenhagen on October 1st.
