Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu announces death of Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Wednesday that Mohammed Sinwar, the de facto leader of Hamas in Gaza, has been killed. During a speech to Israel's parliament, Netanyahu listed the names of top Hamas leaders, including Sinwar, who reportedly met their end during the prolonged Israel-Hamas conflict.

Netanyahu, without further explanation, announced the elimination of Sinwar, a term Israeli officials often use for targeted killings. The Israeli military has yet to issue a statement on the apparent death of Sinwar.

Sinwar joined the ranks of Hamas leaders killed by Israeli forces, including his older brother Yahya Sinwar, a top target for the Israeli military, who was killed in October. Ismail Haniyeh, who led Hamas' political wing, was assassinated in Iran last year, an incident Iran blamed on Israeli forces but Israel did not acknowledge responsibility for.

Since Yahya Sinwar's death, Mohammed Sinwar had been widely described in Israeli and Arab media as one of Hamas' top leaders in the Gaza Strip. While top Hamas leaders based in Qatar did not appoint Mohammed Sinwar as the group's sole leader after his brother's death, militants in the Gaza Strip largely followed him, according to reports. The younger Sinwar has played a crucial role in recruiting new fighters for Hamas as they replace those Israel claims to have killed.

During the nearly 20 months of war between Israel and Hamas, which started after Hamas-led militants launched an attack on southern Israel in October 2023, more than 1,200 civilians have lost their lives, and 251 are believed to have been taken hostage back into Gaza. The conflict led to the death of over 54,000 people in Gaza, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry.

Despite the reported death of Mohammed Sinwar, efforts are ongoing for a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. At the White House, President Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff shared optimism about reaching a temporary ceasefire and a long-term resolution to the conflict. However, Israeli officials have vowed to continue the war to capture and control the entire Gaza Strip and dismantle Hamas, despite allowing limited aid to enter Gaza this week.

The families of the remaining hostages have publicly demanded that Prime Minister Netanyahu negotiate a deal to bring their loved ones home and end the war. In a statement following the release of the last living American citizen held hostage in Gaza, Netanyahu emphasized that while a temporary ceasefire may free more hostages, the conflict would not cease until it reached its end.
